Collected Underground FAQ

Welcome to the Collected Underground FAQ:

How old is Collected Underground?
Collected Underground was founded on 17 July, 2004.

Where does the name "Collected Underground" come from?
Peter Nicholls named our group. "Collected Underground" is a lyric from "Widow's Peak" which appeared first on The Wake, which was released in June, 1985.

How does the band feel about the group and its activities?
Collected Underground was founded with the permission of Peter Nicholls and Martin Orford, with the understanding that it not be considered official in any way. No other recordings but live IQ performances may be vined or treed on this list.

Does the band have an archive of live recrodings?
Yes. Peter Nicholls is the band's official archivist. Any recording that is vined or treed on Collected Underground is sent to Peter for the band's archive.

I have a show that I would like to send to Peter - how can I do this?
As one could very well understand, Peter does not like to have his personal information given out. If you are a member of Collected Underground, you can send the recording to either Allison or Malc and they will send it to Peter.

Can I send the show to Martin in care of GEP?
You can, although Martin is not in charge of the band's archive, and Martin and Peter live quite far from eachother. Peter has asked that shows be sent to him instead so Martin does not have to be in charge of this kind of thing.

I am a member of Collected Underground already. Can I vine out a show on the list?
You can, although Peter has asked to audition all of the older recordings that get vined or treed on the list.

Why not weeds? Why only vines and trees?
Many of the groups use weeds as a manner of sending around shows. Collected Underground prefers to use vines and trees instead. It's much easier to control the quality of the recordings by sending out a master copy and easier to fix it when something goes wrong.

I don't have any IQ recordings to trade. Do you need to have any recordings to become a member of the group?
We have many members of the group who started out with no recordings, and have built up sizeable collections.

Can the "burnerless" join Collected Underground?
We do think that CD burners, whether internal or external, are inexpensive enough now for most people to buy. If one is serious about trading, it is important to have a burner with which to make copies for yourself and others. So, the answer to this question is yes; we do require that you have a CD burner in good working condition in order to join Collected Underground.

What mail options do I have with Yahoo? I don't have much time to read my email.
You have four options: Individual emails (you get everything delivered when your eamil server receives it), Daily digest (one daily email with all the group's messages), Special notices (not recommended as these kinds of emails are very rarely sent out), and No email (you have to log into the Yahoo group to read the messages). It's up to you. You can be as active as you like in the group. We just ask that you are an honest and conscientious trader.

I have a live recording and I am wondering if there is any artwork for it? How can I check this?
That is a very common question here. Not every show has artwork, as it is an "all volunteer" effort. Nevertheless, more than a few list members really like to make artwork! You can find the full resolution covers on the Collected Underground Artwork Page.

I am unfamiliar with the data encoded formats, such as flac and shn. Does that mean that I cannot join the group?
In order to be fair to all fair traders who want to join Collected Underground, we do not discriminate with formats. We vine audio, flac and shn formats.

If I want to find out about data encoded formats, where can I go?
To find out everything about flac, you can consult FLAC Sourceforge Info. For SHN you can consult Etree SHN Software and Info. These are both free programs.

I've heard that Exact Audio Copy is the best way to extract wav files. Can you tell me more about EAC?
Absolutely. EAC is the best program by which to faithfully duplicate a wav file. Moreover it's a free program. You can download the software and find out all about how it works here: Exact Audio Copy home page.

How do I find out what has been vined or treed out to the group?
When you join the group you can find out exactly what has been vined and treed out to the group. There is a folder with all such information, available only to members of Collected Underground, complete with a setlist and any important information about the recording.

What happens with unclaimed shows?
Unclaimed shows go into "The Attic" where they wait until they are claimed. "The Attic" is a database, available only to members of Collected Underground, in the Yahoo Group.

Are there any shows that have been banned?
Indeed there are. You can find the list of banned shows here.

Why are some shows banned?
Some shows are banned because they have been released on the GEP label, either on DVD or through the Archive Series. There are some shows that are banned because Peter has requested to be so, as well.

Does Collected Underground have a digital hub for downloading shows?
Not at the moment. Someone would have to step up and volunteer to be a hub. You can find some shows on Dime a Dozen or DC++.

Is there an online source for all things IQ
Indeed there is! Frederic Cermelj, in France, has built and runs the excellent IQ Museum. You can also go to the IQ Official Website. Remember, though, that Collected Underground is in no way official. and exists only through the generosity of Peter Nicholls and Martin Orford. We also have an an assorted IQ links page.

I am an IQ fan in [name your country here]? Are there other people in my country who are members?
Every IQ fan, worldwide, is welcome to join, as long as they are an honest trader and follow the group's rules. We have members from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United States. At present we have about 150 members.

What happens to members who get caught selling IQ recordings on Ebay or another auction group?
They will be expelled from Collected Underground and banned from ever joining the group again. We are aware of some notorious bootleg sellers and we want to protect the good reputation of this group and protect the band from such sellers.

I see someone is selling an live IQ recording on Ebay. What can I do to get the listing removed?
We are very protective of the band's interests and dedicated to helping them get any such listings removed. If you become a member of Collected Underground, we have a process that we follow in order to get the listing removed.

I am a prospective list member in [name your country here]. My English is not go good. Can I read more about the group in my native language?
While the business of Collected Underground is conducted in English, it is a very international membership and we are very sympathetic to all IQ fans the world over. English is a difficult enough language to learn and speak without understanding the very technical trading terms that are used in a group such as ours. Stay tuned! Coming soon we will have introductions and how-tos in other languages to make things more clear to non-English speakers.
The Index page has been translated into these languages so far:
FRENCH by Gilles La Tortue.
GERMAN by Jörg Heinrich.

Who is the webhost company for these pages?
The webhost company is Aplus.net. They are based in San Diego, California, USA and have been extremely helpful, have 24 hour a day technical help, and have affordable hosting rates. I (Allison) have been very pleased with them and can highly recommend them if you are looking for a hosting company for your web site.

I have a question that was not answered on this list? Where can I write for more information?
If you have any other questions, comments and concerns you can email the Collected Underground Moderators and we will do our best to answer your queries.
