Welcome to the Collected Underground Informational Website.

Collected Underground was founded on 17 July, 2004 with the permission of Peter Nicholls and Martin Orford at the request of the group's founder, Allison. The moderators of the group are:

Allison, who resides in the United States,
Malc, who resides in England,
and
Randy B., who resides in Ontario, Canada.

The group exists as a home for IQ fans the world over to trade live shows from one of the oldest and most reknowned groups in Progressive Rock. Only live unofficial IQ shows may be traded; thus any demos, officially released Archive Series recordings and any recording Peter Nicholls would rather not have circulated are considered to be banned shows. We trade in both data (flac and shn) and audio formats in order to be fair to traders who want to join in various stages of their collecting.

Collected Underground is a very active trading community, which operates in the Yahoo Groups Universe. We currently have 149 members, represented in four continents (excluding the Arctic, Antarctica, and Africa) and have exchanged, through vines and trees, approximately 100 live shows which span from 1983 to the present 25th anniversary concert tour. Some of our members have been following the band since the days of The Lens, and the early IQ shows; others have seen the band once or twice because of the infrequency of touring outside Europe and the United Kingdom; others have never seen the band play!! Although the business of the group is conducted in English, the founder, moderators and list members, are well aware that English is only one of the world's major languages, and we plan to have basic informational material available in other languages at some point, so that we do not leave any fan out that wants to be included in our group.

This site was founded, again with the permission of Peter Nicholls and Martin Orford, in December of 2006, as a home for our group in order that we might make the process easier for the moderators of the group and the prospective members of the group. Any IQ fans, old or new, and traders are welcome to join Collected Underground providing that they are honest and prompt traders and have the ability to burn and copy CDRs. The group is in no way affiliated with the Official IQ Website or with the distribution label GEP (Giant Electric Pea). We are now and will always be an unoffical group, albeit approved, and actually given our name, by Peter Nicholls and Martin Orford. Any copies of recordings that get vined or treed to the list are sent also to Peter Nicholls for the band's own archive in appreciation of their approval of our activities.

Are you interested in joining Collected Underground? Are you curious about how to join or how this all works? Well, please read the following sections and if you have any questions you can email the Collected Underground Moderators and we will answer any questions or concerns you may have.

How does this all work?

There are many of us who have been trading for a while or even a long time, but you must realize - and we must remember - that we were ALL new to it once and had to cope with some kind of learning curve. So, now that that is out of the way, I'll explain "vining" and "treeing". Some of you may know this already but for those are still new to this, this will serve as a bit of an intro to how this all works.

**Vining**
A process whereby one person will start a copy of a show and announce it to the rest of the group. There is a master disc or discs which that person will say is now ready to be passed on to the next person and one of us here will request it off list. The winner of that show or vine then makes a copy of the master(s) for her-/himself and re-announces the show to the list in order that the next winner may claim the show. The masters are then passed on to the winner.

We vine in AUDIO format or SHN or FLAC data encoded formats. AUDIO discs just have the wav files burned disc at once and are CD-ready so to speak. Data encoded formats are generally decoded into AUDIO format. You may want to ease yourself gently into this if you want to learn this, if at all. Vines will also be offered geographically in both formats, one vine for Europe/UK and the other for The Americas/Japan/Australia. It cuts down on time this way when discs don't have to cross the ocean. We started doing this once we got to about 60 or so members so there are vines that are still not geographical.

**Trees**
A process by which a SEED, that is the person who has the masters in hand, will burn the discs for BRANCHES trading that same number of discs for the show that they are sending out, i.e. this is a kind of organized trade. LEAVES are those persons who do not wish to burn be branches or don't have the time or inclination to make multiple copies. LEAVES trade disc for disc with their branches or do what is called B&P (blanks and postage), that is just sending a blank or blanks to cover the materials used by their branches.

Trees, again are organized as geographically as possible to cut down time for the discs to travel.

How do I apply to be a member of Collected Underground?

Please keep in mind that IQ (especially Martin and Peter) have a wonderful understanding that live recordings keep a band alive in the eyes of their fans and even attract new ones. They have approved this trading group with the understanding that it is not to be considered official in any way. In fact, Peter Nicholls suggested the name for the group. As a courtesy to the group, any recording passed around the list will be sent to the band for their own archive of their performances.

So, with this in mind, we as moderators have an obligation to the band to ensure our members will adhere to good trading practices.

Here are the steps to follow in order to become a member of Collected Underground:

*Go to the Collected Underground Launch Page.
*Click on the "Join this group" button on the top right of the page.
*You can use your own email address, but yahoo will make you have a Yahoo ID, so you must choose one of these.
(If you do not apply to become a member through Yahoo we cannot approve your membership!!)
*There will be a small box where you only have a limited space to write an introduction.

The group would like more information. To achieve that goal we request that applicants tell us a little bit about themselves when applying. Without your more detailed introduction message, we cannot approve your membership. Once we receive your detailed introduction, we will forward it to the list so that everyone can read it. So please do reply giving us some details on yourself:

*Your full name*
*How you found out about the group*
*Where you are in the world*
*How you came to like the music of IQ and what you enjoy so much about the music*

You can tell us anything else you like, for example your first IQ concert (if you have been lucky enough to see the band live) or your favourite cheese ... basically anything that lets us know you a little better and something more than “Hello, my name is Bill, I like IQ!!"

Please send your response to the moderators at the following address and give us 24 hours or so to get back to you:
CollectedUnderground-owner@yahoogroups.com

Thank you for your understanding in this matter and welcome in advance to the group! We look forward to receiving your introductory email soon.

Do you have artwork for shows?

That is a very common question here. Not every show has artwork, as it is an "all volunteer" effort.
Nevertheless, more than a few list members really like to make artwork!
You can find the full resolution covers on the Collected Underground Artwork Page.

Can you tell me more about IQ?

Why, of course! Happy to help with some links.
You can find all kinds of links on the Collected Underground Links Page.
